Cellu Tissue Holdings, Inc.'s Menominee Paper Company is located in Menominee, Michigan at the southern most tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The mill can be found adjacent to the Menominee River where the river meets the Bay of Green Bay.
The mill dates back to the early 1900's when it was owned and operated by Hoskins Morainville. In 1944, Marathon Corporation purchased the facility and began producing a variety of bleached white paper grades. Marathon eventually merged with American Can in 1957. With American Can, the production mix shifted to coated food board and converted waxed product. The mill served as a deep water port facility given its adjacent location to the Great Lakes.
In the early 1970's, Bell Packaging purchased the Menominee facility to complement its corrugated packaging business segment. Menominee became one of the nation's first mills to produce recycled linerboard. Today, Menominee Paper Company is owned by Cellu Tissue Holdings, Inc. and concentrates on its MG (machine-glaze) strengths in the production of white papers. Menominee has always been successful with wax application and is best known for its Waxtex® brand of household wax paper and bags.
